Do I need any previous musical experience?
No, I teach students of all levels. Everyone is welcome!
What equipment do I need?
Well, the most important thing you need is a double bass! It doesn’t need to be an amazing quality instrument but even a cheap one, if set up well can play nicely and sound great. Secondly you’ll need a computer with Zoom installed and a good quality internet connection. We can thoroughly test out your setup during the taster session.
I don’t yet have a double bass. Can you help me find one?
Yes, I’m happy to do my best to help you find one. Just let you know your budget and I can ask around. Also, if you have seen one advertised I can read through the advert and offer advise.
What length of lesson do you recommend?
That really depends on what level you are at and what you are hoping to achieve. We can discuss this in the taster session. As a general rule though, if you are new to the double bass it’s probably best to start with 30 minute sessions. The double bass can be quite a demanding instrument at first and regular but shorter lessons are a good way to get your strength up! However if you’re at a more advanced level or are working towards specific performances or qualifications then a 45 or 60 minute lesson would be best as time does fly!
How much should I be practising?
Regular practice is the key to improving, so the more the better! However, it’s best not to overdo do it, if you strained yourself from over practicing that could really set you back. As a beginner to intermediate level I would suggest practicing regularly for short amounts of time, for example 20 minutes a day three times a week to start with, increasing to 30 minutes as you build up your strength. When you get to a advanced stage you should think about practicing for a least an hour a few times a week. We can discuss and review this during your lessons.
Do I have to take Grades?
No, not at all. I prefer to design a bespoke course of lessons which covers your individual needs rather than being restricted by the curriculum set by the grade examining boards. However I do have plenty of experience of getting students through grade exams so if you have a desire or need to do so, for example to qualify you for a scholarship or qualification or if you’d prefer the more rigid approach and regular assessment offered by the grade system, please let me know!
Can I see you performing anywhere?
Yes, I regularly play concerts and smaller gigs with various different bands and ensembles. Mainly around the UK (I’m based in London) but sometimes overseas as well. Check www.marcuspenrose.com or just drop me an email.
How do we get started?
I’m really happy that you want to have some lessons with me, I’m sure you won’t regret it! Just head to the Contact page and send me an email explaining what you need and we can schedule in your free taster session!
How and when do I pay for my lessons? Generally I ask for payment for each lesson to be cleared by 24 hours before the scheduled lesson. I’ll send you an invoice with a link to pay via PayPal.
If you have any other questions not covered above, please don’t hesitate to send me an email and I will get back to you as soon as I can
